August 6 marked the 45th anniversary of the signing of the US Voting Rights Act of 1965, which gave African Americans the right to vote. In the photo, US President Lyndon Johnson (left) and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (right) congratulate each other at the Act's official signing, August 6, 1965.
Dr. C.T. Vivian, a co-worker with Dr. King in the civil rights movement and a keynote speaker at BPFNA's 2006 Summer Conference, participated in an August 6 commemorative celebration in Selma, AL. Click here to read more. Click here for historical information on the Act and its amendments.
