BPFNA ~ Bautistas por la Paz launches #GivingTuesday campaign to raise money for Summer Conference leadership

From November 1-29, 2016 BPFNA ~ Bautistas por la Paz will hold our third-annual #GivingTuesday Colour the Dove campaign with this year’s proceeds going toward costs to bring top-quality, multicultural leadership to our 2017 Summer Conference in Toluca, Mexico.

The 2017 leadership will include Dr. Elsa Tamez, a liberation theologian from Mexico, as Bible study leader as well as Rev. Gerardo Oberman and Horacio Vivares from Red Crearte as worship leader and music leader. Based in Argentina, Red Crearte is a Latin American network that provides a space for the free, multilingual sharing of liturgical resources, many with a justice focus.

“Having leaders like Dr. Elsa Tamez, Rev. Gerardo Oberman, and Horacio Vivares at our 2017 Conference will be a great opportunity to learn more about the important peace and justice work being done from Latin American contexts,” said Summer Conference Program Manager Ximena Ulloa Montemayor. “Their leadership will introduce new ideas and perspectives, and those in attendance will be able to make new connections with people around our continent.”

The goal of this year’s campaign is to raise $5,000.

“Our 2017 Conference will be the first we’ve held in Mexico, which is a huge step for us,” said BPFNA ~ Bautistas por la Paz Executive Director LeDayne McLeese Polaski. “We always value having a wide range of people present at our Conference and always strive to have a core leadership team composed of passionate individuals who push boundaries when thinking critically about and responding to issues of injustice. Our identity as a four-nation network is unique, and this location with this leadership team will help us live into that identity in a deeper way than ever before. This is why we are reaching out to our network to ask for help in raising funds through this #GivingTuesday campaign so that we may bring these incredible leaders to our conference and offer programming that inspires deep reflection and action amongst attendees who hail from many locations around the world.”

BPFNA ~ Bautistas por la Paz’s annual Summer Conference, which changes each year with regard to location and theme, is a time for peacemakers from across North America and the world to come together for a week filled with powerful speakers, worship, and workshops to equip participants with the inspiration, training, and resources to empower their personal and organizational work for justice. The 2017 Conference will be at Misión Mazahua near Toluca from July 17-22 with the theme When Did We See You Naked?: Clothing Each Other with Hope.

“We use nakedness here as symbolism for vulnerability, which we hope to express in a couple of ways,” said Polaski. “The first is through lifting up the voices and experiences of those most vulnerable in our respective countries and the world over; those who are not seen to have much ‘economic worth’ who are thus most affected by the injustices of the world. The second is by having the courage to be vulnerable with each other. I believe that when we are no longer afraid to trust, when we begin to feel accountable to one another, that is when our work for justice becomes genuine and change becomes real both personally and corporately.”
