Public declaration and concrete action from churches, communities of faith, NGOs and people of good will, regarding the migration and refugee crisis in Mexico and Central America

November 6, 2018

We've signed on to this Mexican-led effort in partnership with many of our friends and partner organizations in Mexico.

To:
The National Institute of Migration in Mexico
COMAR
Secretary of State
Media
Churches
Communities of Faith
NGOs

Diverse faith-based communities, NGOs and people of good will have come together on the following declaration:

1. We categorically reject the means used by the Mexican State to use the Public Security forces in order to stop the "Migrant Caravan" coming mainly from Honduras, exerting violence against the people who make up this Caravan, as well as any violation of the Human Rights of our migrant brothers and sisters.

2. We disapprove any kind of detention or arrest. Their status in Mexico has to do only with an administrative error, so they shouldn’t be treated differently or in a harmful way. Those of us moved by our faith and Christian principles are called to care and welcome everyone experiencing vulnerability – just as the migrant population is experiencing due to forced displacement from their home countries – regardless of their immigration status.

3. We request, knowing that detention and arrest is imminent for many, that the pertinent authorities guarantee the following requests:

a. To preserve the dignity and integrity of every human being during their time at the Migration Detention Centers.
b. To expedite the process and provide assistance for all those requesting to seek refuge, as it is their human right.

4. Our faith-based groups and organizations are very keen to support, assist and serve together with the National Institute of Migration and COMAR in looking for a more efficient process during this crisis as we also clearly understand how complicated the situation is. We lift up the knowledge that, moved by faith and solidarity, we can provide safety, meet basic needs (food, shelter, etc.), and give psychological and pastoral assistance to those during their stay in Mexico even while considering their imminent deportation.
