November 13, 2018

We are now entering the second week of our 2018 #GivingTuesday campaign. Thank you to those who have donated so far. Over the past week we have raised approximately $1100 UDS toward the campaign. This means we have about $3900 to go to reach our goal by November 27.

This year’s campaign is significant as we are raising funds for the 2019 Global Baptist Peace Conference in Cali, Colombia. Past Global Baptist Peace Conferences have sparked an immense amount of effective grassroots work, and many individual peacemakers have been inspired and equipped to continue their own creative and courageous work.

“My presence in (the 2009 Rome) conference, among other things, put me in touch with a number of Baptist peacemakers doing extraordinary work in different parts of the world. Many of them later became important point persons and partners in the peace and justice work I came to do… In the past few years, two important peace fellowships emerged stemming from conversations that started during the Rome conference. Along with other participants in the Rome Conference, I had the opportunity to witness the birth of both peace networks.” –Raimundo César Barreto Jr

“In Rome in 2009, there was a Global Baptist Peace Conference, and I went. There was a workshop on the prophetic theology of peace. The leader said, ‘What can we do?’ ‘How can we respond to this?’ There were eight people in the workshop and we said, ‘Let’s not talk about this now - let’s talk to the Latin American people and hear what they have to say.’ The Latin American people got together and we analyzed the types of violence that our countries were suffering from. We came up with an idea of creating the continental network for peace.” –Ricardo Mayol

Examples like these of past conferences assure us that the impact of the 2019 conference in Cali will be deep and lasting. The 2019 conference will build on this and more important work of Baptists engaged in peacemaking processes around the globe.
