Christian Theology Professors Issue Statement on Trump’s Election

November 17, 2016 | As Christian academics, scholars, and teachers we abhor the President-elect’s rhetoric that has opened up public discourse and actions to discriminatory, hateful, and murderous words and actions so familiar to any student of US-American history and society. Some of our students fear for their lives, families, and convictions, and we join them in their concerns about the future of our country. Since election night, many hate attacks and crimes have already occurred all over the country. As Christian leaders, we condemn any verbal and physical attacks based on race, gender, physical abilities, politics, or religion.   Read more »

We are better together

We are better together

November 15, 2016 | We will come together as peacemakers from throughout Latin and North America with a wealth of experience in seeking justice in a vast array of contexts. We will learn from one another, challenge one another, encourage one another. We will share, rather than hide, our vulnerabilities, knowing that such sharing leads to a paradoxical strength. We will explore together how we live faithfully in the midst of empire, knowing that many among us have explicit experience in doing so with creativity and courage. We will find in our differences and in our commonalities a community that inspires and instructs.  Read more »

Many have described Summer Conference as a life-changing experience

Many have described Summer Conference as a life-changing experience

November 8, 2016 | Many who attend our annual Summer Conference describe it as a life-changing experience. And when asked why they return year after year, many mention the quality speakers and programming that continue to impact their worldview and work after returning home. Next year we will hold our first-ever Summer Conference in Mexico, and we are working hard to make sure that it will be a memorable experience for all who plan to attend. We’re particularly excited about sharing this experience with those from across Latin America who will be joining us for the first time. We know what an impact this week can have. Read more »

Standing in solidarity with Standing Rock: A statement from Emmanuel Baptist Church

Standing in solidarity with Standing Rock: A statement from Emmanuel Baptist Church

November 8, 2016 | The Standing Rock Sioux people say that they are “Defending the Sacred” as they oppose the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline which would transport fracked oil from North Dakota to Illinois. They are engaged in prayerful protest and non-violent resistance to protect themselves, their water and their land. As members and friends of Emmanuel Baptist Church and as Christians who seek to imitate the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, we stand in solidarity with our Lakota and Dakota brothers and sisters. Theirs is a movement for justice undergirded with prayer. We add our prayers for a just and peaceful outcome to this conflict as we also defend the sacred. Read more »

Crossing Religious Borders in the Bible Belt

Crossing Religious Borders in the Bible Belt

November 7, 2016 | Teaching at Belmont University in Nashville, a Christian institution situated close to music row and to Vanderbilt, is a job I cherish, and the most popular class I teach, one that focuses on world religions, is also my favorite course. It’s a class that provides me with the opportunity to cross the religious borders in town and to form relationships and friendships with people I may otherwise have never encountered. This is how I came to know the current resident scholar of the Islamic Center of Nashville. I invited him to come speak to my students about Islam, and he did so faithfully and repeatedly. He agreed to come every semester and spoke not only of Islam, but also shared details about himself and his experiences. Read more »
