My memories of the Global Baptist Peace Conference 2019 in Cali, Colombia

My memories of the Global Baptist Peace Conference 2019 in Cali, Colombia

August 19, 2019 | My attendance at the Global Baptist Peace Conference in Cali was prepared with enthusiasm. My 16-year-old son, Carlos David, whom I had promised to take with me, was very excited. How could he not be?! For him it would be his first plane trip and the first time he would leave Mexico. During the flight my son was continuously tracking our path through each Central American countries on the small screen in front of his seat. He would occasionally direct his gaze toward the window in case there was a possibility of a glimpse of a little bit of land. After all, glimpsing Central and South American was for him a view of a new world, and arriving to Bogotá the beginning of new and exciting experiences. Read more »

An Important Update from BPFNA ~ Bautistas por la Paz

August 7, 2019 | At the beginning of June 2019, an HVAC unit on the floor above ours busted, which flooded our office and hallway and resulted in serious water damage. We began working with our host church to repair the damage, and were hoping to be back in our location by the time we returned from the Global Baptist Peace Conference at the end of July or early August. As it turns out, they found more structural damage than originally expected, which will take months to repair. We are not sure if we will be back in our physical office before the end of the year. Staff who work in the Charlotte office met earlier this week to devise a working plan to ensure everything will run as smoothly as possible while construction is taking place. If you have tried to call the office and cannot get through, we apologize for the inconvenience and are working on getting call forwarding in place as soon as possible. In the meantime, it is best to contact BPFNA ~ Bautistas por la Paz staff by email. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we deal with this issue. Read more »

A Few Words

A Few Words

July 2, 2019 | On Harry Potter’s first day at Hogwarts, shortly after he’s been sorted into Gryffindor, he witnesses this scene: Albus Dumbledore had gotten to his feet. He was beaming at the students, his arms open wide, as if nothing could have pleased him more than seeing them all there. “Welcome!” he said. “Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you.” (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, p. 123) I’m tempted, especially now that you’ve spent the last several days being washed over by words, to do something similar and simply literally say “a few words” – Maybe some of my favorites – Poetry! Beauty! Story! Silence! Or some trickier ones that I need nonetheless – Nuance! Subtlety! Trauma! Rage! If the rabbis are right (and they usually are), “words make worlds.” Which leaves me wondering – Which words created the world in which we find ourselves? And which words might remake the world? God of the Poor, a prayer
