I am a Baptist pastor

March 17, 2017 | I want to tell you about Baptists, how in the 1700s early Baptists helped shape the U.S. constitution by promoting freedom of religion. Religious liberty is in our Baptist DNA. I want to tell you about religious liberty, how it grants all of us freedom to practice our religion in peace and freedom from religious coercion. I want to tell you about my religion, how all the law and prophets can be summed up like this: Love your neighbor as yourself. Read more »

What you can do: Concrete ideas for action in these times

December 1, 2016 | We have been collecting some concrete ideas for action around the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, which has rocked the world and has implications that reach across the globe. The work of seeking peace rooted in justice has certainly shifted as the very old realities of racism, bigotry, and violence have become visible in a new way. We are grateful for all the ways BPFNA ~ Bautistas por la Paz members and Partner Churches are responding. We pledge to support you in that work and to continue our mission to gather, equip, and mobilize people of faith to create a culture of peace. Read more »

A report from Standing Rock (and actions you can take to support the work)

November 28, 2016 | During the six days I was in the Oceti Sakowin camp, I spent most of my time as a member of the Water Protectors Legal Collective, observing actions and helping with jail support. A part of my job was sitting with people and recording their experiences of police brutality. I recorded stories of police breaking ribs at peaceful sit-ins, repeatedly strip-searching young women, throwing elders in dog cages, destroying sacred ceremonial items, dragging indigenous young people from cars, and denying medical care or needed medicine after protectors were teargassed and beaten. It is clear that the military forces protecting DAPL intend to destroy this movement by any means necessary. Read more »

Standing with Standing Rock

Standing with Standing Rock

November 23, 2016 | “My good heart goes to your good heart.” These were the words of a Lakota woman at Standing Rock in early November, speaking to hundreds of clergy and people of faith who had come from all over the country to stand in solidarity with the Sioux Nation as they fight to protect their water and their sacred sites against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). I was so honored to be among those who gathered. Read more »
