Lee McKenna's Journal: Sudan, November 2008

Print

January 27, 2009 | bpfna

Lee McKenna has been representing the BPFNA across the world for many years. Her main work is teaching and accompanying people as they experiment with and implement the peacemaking work of transforming conflict. Lee’s most recent trip was a return trip to Sudan in late November 2008. These journal entries chronicle her travels and encounters. You are invited to prayerfully read them over and imagine yourself there alongside her as she accompanied peacemakers intent on transforming conflict in their war-torn land.

Entry 1 - The website of the Sudanese Embassy in Ottawa features some beautiful ‘postcards’, many of them from either the Meröe pyramid fields at the sixth cataract of the Nile or the marine life of the Red Sea, with enticements to consider scuba diving while in Sudan....

Entry 2 - Light arrives to pick me up. We stop first at SONAD’s new offices; quite an improvement, larger, more space, not so down at heel....

Entry 3 - A local newspaper carries news of yesterday’s attack on an Army Base in North Darfur by one of the rebel groups, the Sudan Liberation Army – to which the military responded with an air attack on nearby villages, the dead not yet counted....

Entry 4 - The journey to the compound is quiet today, with businesses closed for the Muslim day of prayer....

Entry 5 - The daily newspapers are spread out before rickety stalls in the market, samples of each weighed down with stones or clipped with metal hooks and flapping like clothes drying in the breeze....

Entry 6 - It’s Sunday and the Christians have not yet shown up. For the vast majority, however, it is the first day of the work week and the streets, wide, with opaque boundaries that are often parallelled by deep and half-concealed drainage ditches that often break the axles of the unwary, are back to a bustle, a chaos of human, animal and vehicular traffic....

Entry 7 - Reassembled in a room now still and hot in the mid-day brown-out, trainers, translators and trainees alike struggle to grab hold of concepts and vocabulary flung across linguistic chasms....

Entry 8 - During the morning re-cap the conversation centres on power and gender, honour and shame....
