Engaging Together in the Complexities of Religion, Social Conflict and Peacebuilding

Engaging Together in the Complexities of Religion, Social Conflict and Peacebuilding

January 4, 2019 | Thanks to the generous support of BPFNA, I had the honor of presenting a peacebuilding course during the 2018 Hispanic Summer Program. The title of the course was “Religion, Social Conflict and Peacebuilding.” I was interested in expanding appreciation of religious peacebuilding studies within the Latinx theological and ministerial community. [The course] highlighted topics such as theories of conflict analysis, scholarly approaches to peacebuilding and religious peacebuilding, the contribution of truth commissions and trials, religious meanings and components of reconciliation processes, the involvement of civil society and the global justice movement in peacebuilding, the characteristics of interreligious dialogue for peacebuilding, feminist critical approaches to peacebuilding, and the constructive function of religions for a spirituality of solidarity, peacemaking and reconciliation. A year like no other!

December 27, 2018 | My dear friends, there are a lot of new and exciting changes happening in 2019, and many of them are the result of the faithful witness of many people over the years. 2019 is going to be a year like no other year in the life of BPFNA~Bautistas por la Paz!  It is going to be a year of movement, changes, dislocation and relocation that will indeed grow our commitment for peace and justice throughout the world! It is a year that is going to be as exciting as it may be scary because we are daring to go where we have not gone before as an organization. [But] God is calling us to be a community of people who are moved into risky action by the depth of our hearts. Read more »

A reflection on the Migrant Caravan

December 12, 2018 | Recently we have been listening a lot in Mexico, thanks to the information disseminated in the media and social networks, about the phenomenon of the migrant caravan that began its journey through Mexico from October 2018, with the objective of reaching The United States of America. A contingent of approximately 8,400 people, mainly from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, left Central America and have been traveling through Mexico to go to the United States of America. This form of mobilization of migrants from Central America is not something new at all, for at least ten years these types of mobilizations have been carried out in caravans organized by groups of activists in southern Mexico, in a time close to the Easter time. But this mobilization has attracted the attention of the Mexican media and the United States, due to the situation of the arrival of Donald Trump to the presidency of the latter country in 2017 and the harsh measures that he has announced will apply to the members of this caravan who intend to cross the border. Immersion in Tijuana

Immersion in Tijuana

December 12, 2018 | When I decided to participate in the Immersion in Tijuana 2018 experience, I had no idea of what it will mean to my life. I have never had to live the wretched experience of having to abandon my family or my country in search of “better” opportunities. It would be very difficult for me to uproot myself from my family. There were plenty of experiences lived in this immersion, yet I would like to highlight some that impacted my life the most. Read more »

Support the Migrant Caravan: A Resource Kit

December 3, 2018 | We have been deeply encouraged by the many of you who are seeking (and finding) ways of responding to the migrant caravan. We're also grateful to the MANY groups and organizations, formal and informal, that are taking action. We've compiled here some ways you and your church might get involved -- from simple ideas such as providing financial support to more challenging ones like acts of resistance along the border. Whatever you feel called to do, we hope that this compilation will be a support to you. Read more »

Photos of our children

December 3, 2018 | Whose children are in the photos from the border? If we believe that God is the Creator of the entire human family, then these are photos of our children. Our national immigration debate has suffered from the syndrome of “on the other hand…”  Yes, the suffering migrants, but on the other hand, the security of our borders! One of the greatest of this generation´s progressive theologians once said to me, “But we can´t simply have open borders…”  I find myself thinking: "why not"?  Read more »
